Zuiderzeemuseum

Zuiderzeemuseum (South Sea Museum) was the highlight of Enkhuizen.  Made up of houses and buildings from around what is now the IJsselmeer (a large inland lake, formed by building dykes and a sea wall to keep the sea out) which had been relocated to the present site, it was a living history type of experience.

Eric had some smoked herring, which was tasty, but apparently left his hands smelling of herring for many hours regardless of the number of hand-washings.  We tasted old time sweets, and walked around the buildings which were quaintly situated amongst canals and ducks and fields with goats and such.

After seeing a little old lady who had fallen and broken her ankle and then noticing that she was still sitting in the same spot for more than thirty minutes (although well attended by family and staff), we departed, due to my quickly rising anxiety about my mother’s impending visit to Europe, and her great possibility of falling and breaking something and then laying about for an extended period of time while I failed to secure health care for her.
